Five million and counting at station

SHEFFIELD-based onLine rock station radio2XS, celebrated its fifth birthday with its 5 millionth listener and a pan-European chart position which puts it ahead of BBC Radio 1.

Station Editor Jeff Cooper said

"The fantastic news that our 5 millionth listener joined us just before our 5th birthday (which was on 2 December 2007) comes after much press speculation about the future and viability of onLine radio. radio2XS has proved that there is a strong demand for an onLine radio station with history and a highly-credible music pedigree. We are also proud of the introduction of hourly World News bulletins last month, which has increased our topical relevance to our global audience."

The station has avoided 'spot-advertising', instead generating its revenue from CD sales through Amazon and Google stores. Cooper says that radio2XS is now planning to introduce sponsorship of key programme strands.

The latest chart released by RealOne player owners RealNetworks in Europe sees radio2XS climb again to number 41 - with BBC Radio 1 at number 60. The chart is derived from actual listening plus the number of times a listener adds that station to their Real player 'favourites'. radio2XS is closing the gap on BBC 6Music, now at 31.

Jeff Cooper: "It's worth noting that our overall annual budget is about 1/1000th of 6Music's."
