Greens’ plea to look at reopening more local rail stations

Sheffield Greens are pressing the case for the reopening of rail stations in Heeley, Millhouses and Totley Brook.

They are welcoming proposals to upgrade Dore and Totley station on the Sheffield to Manchester line - and want to go further to encourage people to take the train instead of the car.

Recent reseach has shown that Sheffield is one of the most congested cities in the country, and it is getting worse, said Green councillor Rob Murphy. When improvements have been made at Dore and Totley, it will “open opportunities” at other stations along the route.

Proposed changes by Network Rail at Dore and Totley involve removing a long-standing bottleneck by creating extra tracks so more trains can stop there and fast trains can pass slow ones. There can be two express trains between Sheffield and Manchester every hour instead of two.

Lib Dems also welcomed the prospect of a “significantly improved” trans-Pennine route at a council meeting.
