A multi-billion insurance company merger affecting hundreds of Sheffield workers has been completed.

Aviva has made a £5.6bn takeover of Friends Life.

The company has already revealed it expects to cut 1,500 jobs, almost five per cent of its workforce, as part of its plans to make £225 million of annual savings from the deal by the end of 2017.

Aviva employs around 1,300 workers in Sheffield, based at its offices on Pear Street, off Ecclesall Road.

The company says it hopes to limit redundancies through normal staff turnover and the use of existing vacancies.
