New postgraduate loans welcomed by Sheffield University - but with warning that poor students still need more support

Government plans to introduce postgraduate student loans have been welcomed by Sheffield University - but with a warning that those from poorer backgrounds will still need extra support.

Dr Tony Strike said the loans of up to £10,000 would still not help the least well-off get fair access to top professions such as law and medicine.

He said: “Graduates from the least well-off backgrounds say they wish to go onto postgraduate study, but are discouraged by debt and a scholarship solution has been proved to be more effective.”
