Plans for faster trains are on track

EAST Midlands Trains says a £69m project to speed up rail services between Sheffield and London to under two hours is due to start early next year.

Outgoing managing director Tim Shoveller said: “The work to increase line speeds will take 18 months to complete and mainly involve sections of track in Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Bedfordshire.”

The fastest journeys at present take two hours seven minutes.

Mr Shoveller, who is leaving to become managing director of South West Trains, was speaking after joining Master Cutler Pam Liversidge at a ceremony in Sheffield to name a train after The Cutlers’ Company.
