Plusnet Lee scoops top tech award

Internet service provider Plusnet’s founder Lee Strafford has been named Yorkshire’s most celebrated technology entrepreneur.

The former Sheffield Wednesday chairman, who is now playing a pivotal role in the Cloud City initiative to attract technology based jobs to the Sheffield City Region, secured the accolade from city-based technology PR consultancy Roaring Mouse.

Roaring Mouse based its rankings on how prominently and regularly Yorkshire’s technology entrepreneurs were mentioned in national, local and social media.

Lee beat Freeserve co-founders Ajaz Ahmed and Peter Wilkinson into second and third place respectively, while David Richards, who floated fast expanding Sheffield software firm WANdisco on the Alternative Investment Market earlier this year, came fourth.

Roaring Mouse’s managing director, James Taylor, said: “Lee Strafford’s time in football certainly raised his profile, but he was starting from a high base as a prominent technology entrepreneur who did spectacularly well with Plusnet.

”He has maintained a constant and consistent presence across a range of news and social media over the last few years, cementing his position as Yorkshire’s most celebrated technology entrepreneur.”
