Playing fields in the east of Sheffield are set to be protected from any future development by being officially named a Fields in Trust site.
The proposals for the playing fields, between Waterthorpe Greenway and Ochre Dike Lane – close to Crystal Peaks – will go before a meeting of Sheffield Council’s cabinet committee next Wednesday.
Thousands of people protested four years ago against plans to build a bus station for the shopping centre, alongside a car park and supermarket, on the site.
And two years ago local residents submitted an application to have the land declared a village green.
However, the new designation was preferred as the fields’ football pitches could continue to be used for team sports.
Coun Isobel Bowler, cabinet member for culture, sport and leisure, said: “I am confident that naming the playing fields as a Fields in Trust site will not only shield them from development, but also enable the land to be used for sports and recreation for generations.”
