Sharrow Vale already has a strong reputation as a destination for those looking for a more distinctive shopping experience.

Now businesses in the area are branching out by allowing customers to support local shops by buying groceries and household supplies from the comfort of their armchairs.

Shops offering deliveries so far through the We Deliver Local website include the Porter Brook Deli, the Sharrow Vale Hardware store and JH Mann Fishmongers.

As well as a door-to-door service, users of the site can also order and pay online 24 hours a day and then pick up from the store, using a ‘click and collect’ facility.

David Sorsby, founder of Sheffield web firm LiveLight, is co-ordinating the deliveries in Sheffield.

He said research has shown that money spent in local, independent shops tends to benefit communities more than if it is spent at a business run by a large chain.

“So much of the food we eat comes from sources hundreds or thousands of miles away,” said David.

“If we bought even 10 per cent of our weekly shop from local shops, and preferred locally sourced food, it would provide a huge boost for the local economy – not to mention bringing big environmental benefits.”

Shops pay a monthly fee to be part of the initiative, entering their products and prices into the delivery service’s system to build up their own online shop.

In 2014 the website was nominated for the prize of the Observer newspaper’s Ethical Business of the Year for its role in promoting local, independent trade.
