Staff help make it better

Big-hearted employees have raised an impressive £25,000 for Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity in support of its Make it Better appeal.

Staff at steel fixings manufacturer Ancon Building Products anticipated it would take them three years to hit their ambitious fundraising target but managed to achieve it in just 18 months.

The bumper funds were raised through a variety of events, from cake sales and fancy dress days to a raffle to win an extra day’s holiday and a weekly ‘open the box’ game, where staff could win cash prizes.

In addition, some members of the Ancon team went the extra mile for the charity by throwing themselves into more physical fundraising challenges.

The extra efforts included teams hiking 3,017ft up Mount Snowdon and pushing themselves to the limit at the Rother Valley Triathlon, consisting of a 750m lake swim, 25km bike ride and 5km run.

Several employees from the Sheffield head office also went head to head with staff from the Deeside manufacturing site in a charity football match at Hillsborough Arena.

Pete McDermott, Ancon’s operations director, said: “We are delighted to make this contribution to such a worthy cause and want to say a huge thank you to everyone who helped us reach our goal so quickly. This includes our staff for their continuous support and our customers, suppliers and parent company CRH plc, without whose generosity this wouldn’t have happened.

“We hope we can inspire other businesses to support this appeal by demonstrating that although donations of this size may seem daunting at first, they are possible with the right mix of fundraising ideas and a company-wide commitment.”

All funds raised by Ancon will help to extend Sheffield Children’s Hospital with the addition of single occupancy rooms for patients and parents to stay together and recover with privacy.

The transformation is under way with land cleared, ready for building to begin.
