The Government has committed to working with Sheffield to help the city reap the full benefits of HS2.

The pledge comes in response to HS2 Growth Taskforce’s report that recommended places with HS2 stations should develop detailed strategies to make sure they can seize the economic opportunities the high speed rail link is expected to bring.

Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin promised strong government support and funding to help all HS2 locations, including Sheffield, to develop ‘growth strategies’ and to realise their visions for how the north-south railway will kickstart wider economic growth, creating more jobs and attracting investment.

It is forecast HS2 will create around 5,000 jobs in Sheffield through both the construction of the railway and the economic boost it will bring to the area.

Chair of the HS2 Growth Taskforce, Lord Deighton, said: “The HS2 Growth Taskforce report made clear we must not take a ‘build it and they will come’ attitude if we are to make the most of this once-in-a-generation opportunity.

“It is up to all of us in government, local authorities, HS2 Ltd and UK businesses to unlock its full potential.”
