Sweet reminder of city Thornton’s link

THE original Sheffield home of chocolate makers Thornton’s is to be highlighted with a blue plaque.

Joseph William Thornton lived in Fitzwalter Road, Norfolk Park, when he opened the country’s first Thornton’s shop in Norfolk Street 100 years ago.

The plaque will be unveiled on September 17 by Joseph’s grandson and former chairman, Peter Thornton, along with Lord Mayor Sylvia Dunkley, with the support of the Hallamshire Historic Buildings Society.

Bruce Sachs, of the society, said: “The family currently living in the house are very excited about it, as are Peter and other members of the Thornton’s family.”
