Fun and laughter in the workplace can create a commercial advantage, say organisers of the annual Hospitality Sheffield Awards.
And these short-listed finalists - in the running for our Smile Award category - help to brighten up the city with their friendly personalities and welcoming smile

The Smile Award is one of seven categories that make up the Hospitality Sheffield Awards, honouring the contribution that hospitality employees make to Sheffield’s economy.
The black-tie ceremony, spotlighting and celebrating the people that work hard to make visitor’s experiences of Sheffield enjoyable and memorable. will be held this year at Doubletree by Hilton Sheffield Park hotel, on Thursday, October 9.
It is set to attract staff from all 30 members of the Hospitality Sheffield consortium,
Managers from local hotels, events and conference venues have explained why they have selected their nominees for the Sheffield Smile Award. Their comments are next to the finalists’ names.

1. Charlotte Brook: Restaurant Manager, Doubletree by Hilton, Sheffield Park Hotel
Her smile lights up the day and behind it is the bright and caring personality of a true hospitality professional! She receives huge amounts of positive comments and guest feedback for her polite manner and cheerful personality; she’ll always go that extra mile for guests, radiates positivity and natural warmth. It it is always a pleasure to be in her company.
2. Lisa Earp: Housekeeping Supervisor, Holiday Inn Doncaster
Lisa is an extremely valued member of the housekeeping team. It isn’t just her smile that lights up a room; it’s her infectious and often wicked laugh that makes her stand out. She chats easily with guests. Known for her easy going personality and vivacious, friendly nature, she greets people with a beautiful smile and cheerful personality.
3. Lauren Ellaway: Wedding Co-ordinator, Tankersley Manor
Sheffield girl Lauren will go out of her way to help colleagues and guests. She is confident, friendly and bubbling with positive energy; a perfect personality for helping make a bride’s day the happiest of their lives! She is a very fast learner and developed extremely quickly into her role.
4. Dali Fedhila: Night Manager, Hampton by Hilton
No matter what the task at hand or the time of day, Dali, is always wearing his infectious smile, bringing cheer to guests and spreading an upbeat atmosphere throughout the team. His positive attitude to work is unshakeable. He never once loses his sparkle or beaming smile. He exceeds expectations – with his famous smile always beaming.
5. Lucy Frewer: Receptionist, Leopold Hotel
Lucy is a fantastic ambassador for both the hotel and the city. She will never been seen at the front desk, or anywhere in the hotel for that matter, without a beaming smile on her face. She is extremely dedicated and ambitious and no job is ever too small.
6. Katie Froggatt: Senior Shift Leader, Hilton Sheffield
Katie is a true reflection of Yorkshire character and charm; she has become the face of Hilton Sheffield’s Front Office Team thanks to her bubbly and charismatic personality. She has an amazing rapport with guests who leave incredible feedback and can’t praise her enough. Katie is a valued for her hard work, enthusiasm and personality that never fails to cheer others up.
7. Jodie Grey: Wedding & Events Co-ordinator, Best Western Plus, Mosborough Hall Hotel
Jodie is a constant source of smiles, happiness and amusing stories to keep guests and staff entertained. She is enthusiastic, hardworking and has endless amounts of positive energy which clearly rubs off on whoever she is around. She puts 100% into everything she does and is never seen without a beaming smile on her face.
8. Gemma Hancock : Graduate Manager/ Acting Accommodation Manager, Jurys Inn
Gemma is one of the most upbeat and optimistic people you will ever encounter. She is a natural born hotelier and couldn’t imagine herself in any other industry! Gemma makes guests feel welcome with her friendly and genuine smile. She conquers each task with her everlasting smile and passion for hospitality.
9. Shumin Kahnum: F&B Assistant, Kenwood Hall
Shumin brightens the hotel with her huge personality and infectious smile. She joined the team as a shy young lady but soon surprised staff with her friendly, confident and enthusiastic personality. Shumin receives numerous compliments from guests and the team have grown attached to her upbeat and positive attitude. She never lets the smile leave her face.
10. Jacqui Mathias: Reception Manager, Copthorne Hotel
As a result of her length of service and warm, welcoming personality, Jacqui is seen as the ‘heart of the business’ by all the regular guests whom she knows by sight as well as being acutely aware of their individual likes and dislikes. She truly is the face of the Copthorne Hotel and fully represents their warmth and hospitality to all of their guests.
11. Ross Rushforth: Restaurant / Bar & Events, Rutland Hotel
Ross walked into his interview with a huge smile on his face and right then and there his personality won over experience, landing him the job. He has worked across all areas of the hotel and always receives great feedback from guests. He prides himself on making guests feel special. He is confident and professional but, most of all, he always has a smile on his face.
12. Faye Steele: Reservations, Tankersley Manor
Faye is always at the heart and soul of all social arrangements and team nights. She is first person many staff turn to when they need a word of encouragement, some advice, a hug or just a big smile to cheer them up. Faye can quickly recognise if someone is feeling down, both staff and guests, and soon has them laughing and smiling with her warm, bubbly personality.
