THE Duke of Devonshire opens an exhibition at Chatsworth tomorrow (Friday) charting the life of one of his predecessors, renowned as ‘Britain’s Most Inspirational and Eligible Bachelor’.
In a new gallery created from ‘the bachelor apartments’ built by the sixth duke, the exhibition reveals the personality of “a sentimental man with a modern imagination”.
The duke devoted himself to plant collecting, engineering, architecture and art. He loved entertaining and threw lavish house parties and had mistresses but chose never to marry.
The display, which marks the bicentenary of his succession and runs until November 5, reunites portraits of him and his mother for the first time for over a century.
It was his dying wish that the pictures were hung side by side.
