A superb performance from Danny Wilson’s Chesterfield who blew fellow strugglers Shrewsbury Town out of the water with three goals in the first half and four more after the break,

the visitors scoring when it was 3-0 and they briefly threatened to cut the gap even more before the hosts returned to top gear and hammered home plenty more.

Two players bagged braces, Jay O’Shea got the first two goals, a crackerjack volley and a penalty, Spireites first spot-kick of the season, and his replacement Rai Simons also banged in two, the first with his first involvement after coming off the bench, but they were both overshadowed by Lee Novak who scored right on half-time with a first time left-footer and he then converted Chesterfield’s second penalty of the game after Junior Brown fouled Gboly Ariyibi and picked up a second yellow to reduce Micky Mellon’s side to ten men. The on-loan from Birmingham man ended the scoring on 89 when he burst into the box to hammer home and give Spireites a seventh goal for the first time ever at this stadium and also notch his own first ever league hat-trick.

Zak Whitbread was Shrews’ scorer, bundling in from close range after a corner after the first three stabs at goal had been repelled, the only black mark for keeper Tommy Lee on his 300th league appearance for the club.

It’s only the third home win of the season, but having performed like this, the Spireites in the 6233 crowd will expect more to come in the next month or two.
