Cinema: Adrenaline filled films
ShAFF (Sheffield Adventure Film Festival) arrives this weekend at The Showroom and surrounding venues. Now in its 12th year, ShAFF has consistently been an ambitious festival combining Sheffield's two loves, the outdoors and film. The treats on offer include films covering every single outdoor sport, from skiing to canoeing - adrenaline filled short films fill the weekend. '¨A very exciting addition to this year's festival is the Cinema Truck, a lorry which expands and converts to become a 100 seat cinema, keep an eye out for this at the train station and bring the family as there are screenings for all ages running . As Sheffield celebrates its love of the outdoors over the Outdoor City weekend, you can come and appreciate the outside from the inside.Â
ShAFF Director Matt Heason says: “ShAFF is one of the key headline events of the Weekender festival and over the weekend the Showroom will be showcasing some of the most beautiful films on the current adventure film circuit. Whether you’re a runner, biker, climber, skier or like your sports on the water - ShAFF has something for you!”
Here are a couple of highlights:
RUN FOREVER - Nicky Spinks is a beef farmer from Yorkshire and one of the UK’s best fell runners. In 2006, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, turning her world upside down. This truly inspirational film charts her attempt at a record breaking run in the Lake District.
FOUR WOMEN AND A BOAT- This is a wonderful story of four ordinary women who dared to dream of becoming world record breakers as the oldest women to ever row an ocean.
It’s not just high octane thrills this weekend, you can also catch the Oscar Winning Iranian film THE SALESMAN, from Director Asghar Farhadi, this story of a couple whose life is turned upside down in Tehran following tremors in their building and traumas in their personal lives. A wonderful insight into modern day life in Tehran, from the perspective of a modern day couple.
Kristen Stewart, who is never far from our screen, and most recently joined the incredible ensemble cast for CERTAIN WOMEN, is now back with her star turn in Olivier Assayas’ PERSONAL SHOPPER. Maureen (K. Stew) is a personal shopper who communicates with the dead, including her own deceased brother. When she starts to receive mysterious text messages, the spooky factor goes up a notch. Described as critical Marmite, PERSONAL SHOPPER has polarised critics since it premiered, make sure you catch it and make up your own mind. What can’t be denied is that Kristen Stewart consistently makes brave and interesting career choices.
