Court: Killer must serve 20 years in jail

An Iraqi asylum seeker who beat his former friend to death with a baseball bat in a ‘savage’ attack in a Sheffield park has been jailed for life and ordered to serve at least 20 years behind bars.

Nawzad Kamal, aged 39, was found guilty of battering Bahman Yusif Amin, 33, to death, by a jury at Sheffield Crown Court.

The jury took three hours to convict Kamal, of Montfort Drive, Pitsmoor, of the killing, which happened on a patch of grassland outside the murderer’s flat in July.

Judge Mr Justice Keith said: “This wasn’t just murder, it was carnage. You were prepared to fight Bahman Amin to end things once and for all.”

Mr Amin suffered 28 blows and died from multiple injuries which included skull fractures.

The court heard the men fell out after Mr Amin propositioned Kamal’s ex-girlfriend. Kamal then started a relationship with Mr Amin’s former partner. Mr Amin became aware of the relationship, causing further bad blood between them.

Det Insp Jade Brice said the murder was ‘carried out with no regard for human life.’
