He entered the shop at around 8.40pm and demanded money, making off with a quantity of cash.

A second armed robbery, which is being investigated separately to the first, happened at around 7.50am on New Year’s Day in Mexborough, near Doncaster.

A man entered J A and S Windles Newsagents, at the junction of Hirst Gate and Doncaster Road and threatened a worker with a baseball bat, getting the terrified member of staff to hand over money and three packets of cigarettes.

Police have released CCTV images from both robberies today.

The man in the Sheffield incident is described as being between 20 and 30 years old, of heavy build, and around 5ft 7ins tall. He wore a light-coloured buttoned woolen cardigan, a hooded top underneath, and wore a scarf to cover his face.

The man in the Mexborough incident had a distinctive tattoo on his hand and left the shop on foot after the robbery, possibly in the direction of Hirst Gate.

Anyone with information about either incident should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
