Sheffield Homes today issued an alert to residents warning them to take precautions and is offering help to beef-up security in the wake of the incidents.

The company said it is also aware of cold calling in Arbourthorne, and is urging residents to ensure they check callers’ identification before allowing them inside.

Sharon Ward, senior housing warden for the area, said: “The elderly lady was quite frightened once the incident had sunk in.

“The burglars forced open a window and stole cash - it was the third burglary at her home in months.

“She is fine now and we have helped her with security improvements.

“We are urging residents to ensure they keep their homes secure and offer help for them to fit extra improvements such as better lighting and locks.

“Residents are welcome to get in touch for advice.

“There are some improvements we can provide or we can point them in the right direction of other agencies which can help, such as the fire brigade for smoke alarms.”

Ms Ward added that Sheffield Homes has received an alert about cold calling in the Arbourthorne area.

“Residents should always ask for identification and, if they are suspicious, should report callers to us or the police so we can check it out,” she said.

Residents can contact Sheffield Homes for security advice by calling 0114 205 3333, otherwise call the 101 single non-emergency number.
