The public disclosure of the secret Hillsborough files will take place at Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral, the city’s bishop has said.

The Hillsborough Independent Panel has analysed more than 400,000 pages of documents from 80 organisations concerning the disaster at Sheffield Wednesday’s football ground in April 1989 and will make public its findings in September.

The Right Reverend James Jones, Bishop of Liverpool, said: “I can confirm the disclosure on Wednesday, September 12, will take place at the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral.”

It is hoped the panel’s findings will shed new light as to exactly what caused the tragedy which saw 96 Liverpool fans crushed to death.

A report into the disaster by Lord Justice Taylor, published in 1990, found the main reason for the disaster was a failure of “police control”.

Last month the panel, led by Mr Jones, said the documents will be disclosed to the families first.
