Managers of a Sheffield centre for homeless people were battling this week to get the building reopened after pipes were stolen and water left running over the festive period.

It was the fourth recent break-in at Ben’s Centre in Orange Street, off West Street.

Manager Sue Smith said: “It is distressing to think that someone deliberately left the water running just in order to steal a small amount of piping. It is also upsetting to think that these people must be aware of the type of service we offer. The damage is quite widespread meaning that we are, at the moment, unable to offer our usual service to our very vulnerable clients.”

Sue added: “We will not be defeated.”
