Knife alert at gardens concert

Rotary Club members and security staff wrestled a man with a knife to the ground before one of the concerts in the Botanical Gardens.

The man, in his mid-20s, had pushed his way through the gates at the Clarkehouse Road entrance and was trying to get into the gardens for the Heaven 17 performance on the Saturday night without a ticket when he produced a knife, said Music in the Gardens joint production manager Andrew Bates.

“About five Rotarians and two security staff got him down to the ground. One of the security guards sustained a cut finger.”

The man was held until police arrived to arrest him

“We were able to keep him out of the way of the audience,” added Andrew.

The incident, which involved a knife with a “four or five inch blade”, was captured on CCTV.

Music in the Gardens is organised every year in the Botanical Gardens by the Rotary Clubs of South Yorkshire with the help of specialist security staff.
