The cameras will be funded after Police and Crime Commissioner, Dr Alan Billings, secured £850,000 from the Government’s £18.3 million Safer Streets Fund.

Dr Billings applied for the funding on behalf of South Yorkshire Police and local councils, with the cash earmarked for projects to tackle neighbourhood crimes such as burglary, robbery and the theft of and from vehicles.

In addition to CCTV along Ecclesall Road and across Sharrow, Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras will also be installed.

Home security schemes will also be carried out to make properties, including student homes, safer.

Dr Billings said: “I welcome this funding. It will help us to do two things.

“First we will be better able to prevent crime and second, where crimes and serious anti-social behaviour have been committed, it will help to bring the offenders to justice.

“These crimes – burglaries, vehicle thefts and robbery – are those that cause most distress in communities.”

Dr Billings added: “These successful bids involved a great deal of work putting together the different proposals.

“I would like to thank those in my office, in the police and in the local authorities – Sheffield, Doncaster, Rotherham and Barnsley – who worked together, at speed and under great pressure to achieve this excellent result.

“This is the latest of a series of successful bids for funding that we have made during this year of the pandemic.”
