A CAR ploughed through the window of a cycle shop near Sheffield city centre - the fifth time the store has been damaged by drivers losing control of vehicles.

The Audi smashed into JE James Cycles on Bramall Lane at around 5.50am on Sunday - but when police arrived at the scene the driver had fled.

Gavin Holliday, who manages the cycle shop, said CCTV cameras had captured the car travelling along Bramall Lane and running out of control before crashing into the shop.

It is the fifth time the shop has been hit by cars out of control in the last few years.

Mr Holliday asked Sheffield Council to introduce speed calming measures along Bramall Lane to slow down the speed of traffic after one of the incidents.

“During the day it is difficult to reach high speeds because Bramall Lane is so busy but at night when there is nobody on the roads it is easier to reach 70mph,” he said.

“I am just glad this happened when the shop was closed rather than full of customers, which has happened in the past.

“The window was completely destroyed in the crash, along with some brickwork - the builders are experts at repairing this part of the shop.”
