Sheffield gang war links in two gun attacks

GANG wars between rival criminals are believed to have sparked two separate shooting incidents within hours of each other in Sheffield.

A car driving along Emily Road, Nether Edge, was hit by another vehicle and shots were fired at it, in an incident one shocked resident likened to ‘something from Chicago in the 1930s’.

Meanwhile, people living in Holgate Road, Parson Cross, have been left ‘scared’ after two shots were fired at a house from a car.

A Nether Edge resident said: “It’s really worrying. The road was taped off while police searched for evidence and officers have been door-knocking around the area to find out information.

“The incident happened in late afternoon on Friday and the area is small, residential streets with a lot of children and families.

“It’s like something from prohibition-era Chicago in the 1930s.”

Police said they believe the car was ‘targeted’ and that the incident was due to a dispute between criminals.

The driver of the car which was crashed into has been interviewed, but the assailants have not yet been traced and no arrests have been made.

The second incident happened at a house on Holgate Road, Parson Cross, at about 5.30pm on Friday, when two shots were fired at the semi-detached property.

One resident said: “The whole row of houses were taped off and police kept guard all night before they finally left at 3pm on Saturday.

“There was also a shot fired at the end of September on the bottom corner of Holgate Road and Holgate Crescent – a bullet was found in one of the gardens.

“It’s really scary living around here at the moment.”

Another resident added: “There were fireworks going off but then there were two loud bangs which sounded like gun shots. We don’t want this kind of thing happening around our area.”

Coun Leigh Bramall, a member of Sheffield Council’s cabinet who represents Southey ward, which includes the area, said: “People living on Holgate Road will be upset and concerned.

“It’s important now that people help the police with their enquiries into what happened.”

Police said they are considering whether the Holgate Road shooting is linked to other recent incidents including shots fired at a family home on Adlington Road, Parson Cross, on Saturday, October 6, and the shooting of 19-year-old Jordan Porter, on Cuthbert Bank Road, Hillsborough, on Monday, October 22, who was injured in both legs.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “We believe both of Friday’s firearms reports were targeted incidents and due to disputes which have arisen within the criminal fraternity.

“Police would like to reassure ordinary members of the public that they are not at risk.

“We are stepping up patrols in the areas and would urge anyone with information to come forward.”

n Anyone with information about any of the shooting incidents is asked to call police on 101.
