A MAN has appeared in court accused of stabbing the mother of his child to death in a Sheffield street, writes Molly Lynch.

Erham Mehmedov, 44, is alleged to have stabbed Dimitrina Borisova 16 times in Blackstock Road, Gleadless Valley, near to the John O’Gaunt pub at around noon on Thursday.

The Turkish national was arrested shortly after the incident and charged with murder on Friday night.

Mehmedov, who had a two-year-old child with Ms Borisova, spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth when he appeared at Sheffield Magistrates Court on Saturday morning.

Dressed in a black t-shirt and tracksuit bottoms, he remained composed as an interpreter told him he stands accused of pre-planned murder.

The case was sent to Sheffield Crown Court, where the defendant is due to appear this Friday.

Mehmedov, of Blackstock Road, Gleadless Valley was remanded in custody.

Police arrested and quizzed a second person in connection with the ongoing murder investigation, a woman, in her 70s.

Forensic experts were yesterday continuing to comb the street, where a white tent was erected to preserve potential evidence.

The scene of the attack remained sealed off, with police officers standing guard around a cordon and others carrying out house-to-house inquiries.

Police taped off a stretch of road between shops and The John O’Gaunt pub, and extended the cordon around 300 metres to take in two homes, outside which officers were parked.

Community leaders and residents spoke of their shock.

South Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner Shaun Wright it was ‘incredibly sad’.

Sheffield MP Meg Munn said she has spoken to South Yorkshire Police about the murder investigation, and said locals are ‘appalled’.

“This is a very shocking incident, and I know a lot of local residents have been appalled by what has taken place,” she said.

“I visited Valley Park Children’s Centre only yesterday where I spoke to local people who all expressed the sense of shock they feel that this has happened.

Sally Kilic, chairwoman of Gleadless Valley Tenants’ and Residents’ Association, said: “People are genuinely shocked something like this could happen.”

Residents say they were horrified by the killing.
