Shopkeepers in Sheffield have been provided with radios by South Yorkshire Police to warn each other about potential shoplifters.
The scheme has been launched to help 10 traders in Birley Moor, Woodhouse and Gleadless Townend protect themselves from thieves.
PCSO Anna Smith said: “The stores that we have targeted are the ones where repeated offences of shoplifting have been reported.
“We are already trying to assist the retailers through regular PCSO visits but the new radio system will allow them to give each other early notice if they have troublesome customers or those involved in crime in the area.
“The aim of the early warning system is to support retailers, reduce retail theft and give stores a new way of communicating.”
