SINGER Gwendolyn Roomes has been deported to Jamaica, despite a groundswell of local support for her to stay in the UK.

Gwen, aged 59, of Eckington, who is renowned for singing hymns in the city centre, was put on a flight last Thursday after her latest application was rejected.

Son Samuel, aged 27, of Sheffield, said: “She has no money with her, nothing, just a small bag of clothes. She has been completely humiliated and treated like a real criminal.”

More than 2,500 people joined a ‘Free The Singing Lady’ group on Facebook.

She came to Sheffield in 2002 in response to a Government appeal for teachers.
