South Yorkshire bomb house now declared safe

Police officers and bomb disposal experts have declared a house where a cache of weapons was found as now safe.

They sealed off the terraced property on Sheffield Road, Penistone, after discovering a lifetime collection of military memorabilia including mortar shells, grenades and guns inside.

Officers found the stash, which filled every room, after being called out by concerned neighbours who were worried for the welfare of 51-year-old Martin Johnson, whose body was also found inside the house on Wednesday afternoon.

The death is not being treated as suspicious but police but a huge cordon in place around his house fearing for the safety of local residents.

Bomb disposal experts had to carefully examine and removed each weapon, before taking a number away to be blown up in controlled explosions on Thursday.

Around 100 residents were evacuated from their homes following the discovery of the weapons, with nearby Springvale School set up as an emergency evacuation centre.
