Police said today they were called to Herries Road, close to the junction of Galsworthy Road, just before 5pm last night.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman confirmed they had launched a murder investigation and the man, who is in his 20s, had been arrested.

She said: “Police can confirm that the suspicious death in Shirecliffe yesterday is being investigated as murder.

“Emergency services attended an address on Herries Road just before 5pm to find the body of a woman in her 20s.

“A post mortem is being conducted today to establish the cause of death.

“The man in his 20s, found with a serious chest injury in the road, remains in a critical condition at the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield.

“The man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.”

Herries Road reopened yesterday evening but a police cordon remains at the scene and is likely to remain in place while enquires continue.

The Star understands the couple had been in a relationship and the incident is being treated as a domestic case.

A short stretch of Herries Road was taped off last night so forensic examinations could take place.

Forensics officers in white boiler suits could be seen entering the property, and the road was kept under guard at either end by police cars with blue lights flashing.

Friends Courtney Elizabeth and Jodie Brooke, both aged 16 and from nearby Southey, had been watching the scene from across the road for four hours.

Courtney said: “We heard about it at about half five on BBM and Facebook and the internet so we came down here. There were loads of police.

“It is quite rough around here normally but this is different. It’s usually robberies and people hanging about, things like that.”

Jodie said: “We’ve seen the forensics people coming in and out, and going to get stuff out of their van.

“The paramedics went in and the police have been on the doorstep of the flats taking pictures.

“The people who live in the houses opposite have been coming home and they’ve had to be escorted to their homes and told not to come back out. They’ve all had their details taken.”

Dominic Lawton, 18, was visiting his sister whose house is at the corner of the police cordon.

“Everyone has heard that a woman has been killed and a guy was in the middle of the road,” he said. “There have been police everywhere.”

Engineer Michael Harrison, 47, came home from work on his bicycle to find police all over his street.

“My first thought was it must be a road traffic accident. I’ve lived here 10 years, this is shocking,” he said. “Everybody is shocked when something happens so close to home. You never think it will.

“The police haven’t told us anything - just that I shouldn’t walk on the footpath in case there is evidence there.”

A post mortem is due to take place today to establish how the woman died.

Anyone with information which could help the police is urged to call South Yorkshire Police on 101 quoting incident 802 of June 4, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
