DBL Sharks Sheffield 95 Newcastle Eagles 84

A blistering final quarter gave the DBL Sharks Sheffield a superb 95-84 win against ESH Group Eagles Newcastle, their first victory over the opposition since February 2014.

An unstoppable 21-0 run in the fourth period was the key to a memorable Sharks victory.

The opening stages at the EIS gave no indication of what was to come, a 5-0 Newcastle run putting them into the lead before Malcolm Riley and Max Guercy chipped in for a superb 10-0 run which put the Sharks ahead at the end of the first.

However, Newcastle’s quality then began to show, an 18-4 start giving them a commanding advantage before birthday boy Mike Tuck gave the home fans hope of a rival, sinking a few vital baskets to reduce Newcastle’s lead to single figures.

Four points from Max Guercy, who excelled in the absence of Jordan Davis, saw the Sharks go in 41-47 down at the half.

A 5-0 run took the Sharks to within striking distance of the Eagles at the start of the third but Newcastle stood firm under intense pressure - that was until a 6-2 surge brought the Sharks back to within a point.

That gave Sheffield a platform to embark on their incredible run, treating the home crowd to some outstanding play against the side currently second in the BBL.

After the Sharks edged ahead, Newcastle were torn apart by the likes of Guercy and Riley, Wroblicky ably assisting with 16 rebounds and Rashawn Rembert, Tuck and Zach Gachette adding crucial points as the Sharks stretched clear.

The Eagles failed to score for more than seven minutes of the final period and when they did finally come to life, it was too little too late.
