Dog owners, have respect for others
I regularly run through Ecclesall Woods, which is a favourite place for dog walkers and there are signs at the entrance to the woods that say dogs should be kept on leads.
I would estimate that at least 90 per cent of dogs in the woods are not on a lead, with many quite a distance from their owners. While running I have been knocked over by a dog, nipped by a dog and chased after by dogs.
I have had apologies, been told that their dogs have never done that before and that knocking me over was an accident. It was not an accident – it was failure by the dog owner to keep their dog under control.
Not once has the owner then put their dog on a lead. Luckily I have never been badly hurt, but what if I had been a toddler running around – that could have been a different story. And I now do get nervous when I see dogs in the woods. Please, dog owners, have respect for other people using the woods and keep your dogs firmly under control.
