Doncaster Rovers fans' moving tribute after shock death of lifelong supporter
Doncaster Rovers fans paid a moving tribute to a lifelong supporter who died just a few days after attending his final game.
Nidge Roe, who was a familiar face to Rovers fans, died last week, a few days after attendingÂ Rovers' 1-0 defeat at Burton Albion.
And at Saturday's home game against Portsmouth at the Keepmoat Stadium, thousands of fans gave Mr Roe a standing ovation with a minute's applause as his photo was displayed on the big screen.
Supporters of both clubs joined in the moving tribute to Nidge who followed his beloved Rovers all over the country.
A number of further tributes are planned for Nidge, who was a keen participant in the club's Fit Rovers project and an avid player of walking football '“Â a slower paced version of the game.
Doncaster Rovers'Â chief executiveÂ Gavin Baldwin said: "I would like to offer my thoughts and prayers to the family of Rovers fan Nidge Roe.
'Nidge was a familiar face to many fan and was a participant in the Fit Rovers course put on by Club Doncaster Foundation.
"I have spoken to several people in the Foundation who have said what a wonderful man he was, and what a legacy he leaves behind."
Mr Roe died in hospital on August 22 after suffering injuries in an accident at work, according to his sister in law Andrea Morrone, who has set up a memorial fund in his honour.
She said: 'Anyone who knew Nidge or merely had the honour of meeting him, if only once, couldn't help but be touched by his radiance.
'Love, kindness and positivity were his religion and he practiced them every single day.
'He is survived by my beautiful and courageous sister Marie and their two amazing boys Aaron, 15 and Ryan, 13.
'Nidge's family was his utmost priority and proudest achievement.
'He was an avid football fan, particularly Doncaster Rovers.Â He never missed an opportunity to see a match and rarely went out in public without his beloved Rovers shirt.Â
'Nidge appreciated the simple beauty of his life and every one in it. He gave his all expecting nothing in return. This is a fact now set in immortal stone.
Funeral details are due to be announced in the next couple of days.
