Bargain hunters are set to flock to Sheffield shops in their thousands when the sales get under way on Boxing Day.

Bosses at the city’s Meadowhall Shopping Centre are expecting shoppers to begin queuing as early as 2am outside Next, which will be the first shop to open its shutters at 6am.

Boots is also set to open is doors early, at 7am – an hour before the centre officially opens.

Big-name retailers such as Marks & Spencer and Topshop are expected to open their doors when the centre opens at 8am.

Darren Pearce, Meadowhall centre director, said, despite many retailers following an increasing trend to offer discounts before Christmas, he still expects about 130,000 customers to comes through the doors on Boxing Day.

He said: “There has been a lot of people who start discounting early and that has been a continuing trend in the market.

“The official sale date starts on Boxing Day, but clearly there has been some discounting before.

“On Boxing Day, people have always like the sale period and have always clambered for that and this year is no different. It is part of the way of life here at Meadowhall and one of the big features of the Christmas period for us.

“It’s a huge sale day, and it’s also a shorter day for us.

“People will start queuing for the Next sale at about 2am.”

Meadowhall has seen a
4 per cent rise in sales, compared with last year, and Darren expects this to continue.

He said: “It feels as though there is a lot more positivity out there,.

“We have had a strong sales growth and I am expecting this year to end strongly and to see that growth continue over the Christmas and New Year period.

“Clearly the economy is doing better than others and that makes people feel positive about how they feel about things and spending money.”

Meadowhall is open from 8am to 6pm on Friday.
