Children are making good progress at a Sheffield nursery where they are provided with a range and balance of activities.
Ofsted inspectors have rated Hackenthorpe Hall Nursery, Main Street, Hackenthorpe, as good, and said it is meeting the needs of the youngsters who go there.
The centre, which has more than 140 children on roll, is open five days a week all year round and has 21 staff.
Staff were found to have good knowledge and understanding of the early years foundation stage, which prepares youngsters for school.
The children’s communication and language skills were developing well, with staff constantly talking to their pupils and readily joining in their play.
Inspectors found staff asked age-appropriate questions which encouraged youngsters to think and explore their ideas further.
As a result, children were thriving and motivated, enjoying planned and spontaneous events which reinforced and extended their learning.
Inspectors found the utmost priority was given to children’s welfare, thanks to effective practices that promoted safety and wellbeing.
Partnerships with parents and other organisations were well established, with effective systems implemented to give full support to children with special educational needs or disabilities.
There was also good provision for pupils who spoke English as a second language.
However, the inspection team felt there was still work to do, as staff did not always make the most of opportunities to enable the older or more able children to develop their independence further.
It was suggested the pupils could develop those skills by, for example, letting them set up tables and clear away their own crockery and cutlery at snack and meal times.
It was also felt staff performance was not yet effectively monitored to ensure teaching was always focused and clearly having a positive impact on children’s learning.
Beighton mum Catherine Ball, whose three-year-old daughter Jessica attends the centre, said: “We’re really happy with the nursery.
“The staff are very good and always aware of Jessica’s needs and she loves going.”
