Sheffield High School has underpinned its reputation by earning top marks from inspectors in every aspect of its work.
A team of independent school inspectors spent four days observing lessons and activities, scrutinising work and exam results and talking to pupils, staff and governors.
They concluded: “Throughout the school pupils receive an excellent education in accordance with the school’s aims to stretch and challenge the pupils so that they leave the school as strong, open minded and confident women who are independent and who use their initiative.”
Inspectors praised pupils’ exemplary behaviour and relationships with their teachers.
Issues for improvement included ensuring that the most able students did not focus unduly on exams.
