Staff and students at a Sheffield secondary are celebrating after it was named comprehensive school of the year in prestigious national rankings.
Tapton School in Crosspool is the inaugural winner of the title in The Sunday Times Parent Power guide, which is published tomorrow.
It was chosen after rising in national rankings by more than 60 places this year, off the back of outstanding results at A-level and GCSE.
It now stands eighth in the newspaper’s national rankings of non-selective schools.
Tapton is also the flagship of an academy trust which has taken in other schools such as Forge Valley and Southey Green Primary.
Alastair McCall, Parent Power editor, said: “Tapton School makes a huge difference to the lives of its children and their families.
“Its outstanding results speak for themselves and are a product of committed leadership and teaching that leaves no stone unturned in the quest for academic excellence. We were hugely impressed by the wider work of the school trust to spread those virtues to other schools across the city of Sheffield.”
Tapton is also ranked the sixth best state secondary in the north in the guide. Claire Tasker, co-headteacher, said everyone was delighted with the award.
She said: “Our whole school community, brilliant students, outstanding teaching and support staff, fantastic supportive parents and an excellent governing body have received recognition for our highest ever GCSE and A-level results in 2014.
“We are particularly proud to be recognised as a fully comprehensive school that performs better than many selective schools across the country.
“This arises from the passion and hard work of Tapton staff to ensure every student in our school enjoys, achieves and thrives here.”
Other city schools also feature in the guide – Sheffield High School in Broomhill is the ninth best independent in the north, while Mylnhurst School in Millhouses, is the fourth best prep school, with Birkdale Prep, also in Broomhill, sixth. Barnsley’s Silkstone Common is the best state primary school in the north, with Totley Primary in Sheffield fifth and Whiston Primary in Rotherham sixth.
