University cycle hub to give big boost to bikers

Bikers are to be given a boost at Sheffield University with the creation of a new cycle hub for staff and students.

The new facility between the Student Union and the Hicks Building off Western Bank will include showers, changing facilities and space for 162 bikes.

Student Union councillor Jacob Hebditch said: “I’ve heard from students that the bike area under the concourse is a great asset but fills up far too quickly, and this puts some off purchasing bikes in the first place.

“Although there are other places to store bikes they can be exposed to the weather, causing the bike to rust. An inside space will make students feel less worried about the risk of theft.”

The proposals have yet to be given planning permission.
