Emergency plans in place at seven industrial premises in South Yorkshire
Seven industrial sites in South Yorkshire have special emergency plans in place to prevent public and environmental harm in case of accidents, it has been revealed.
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue today named one firm in Sheffield, three in Rotherham and three in Doncaster, where special emergency plans are needed.
The plans have been produced under Control of Major Accident Hazards Regulations for firms using, producing or storing hazardous substances.
A fire service spokesman said: "Sites must produce an emergency plan to mitigate on site accidents and comply with various other health, safety and environmental regulations to ensure risks to people and the environment are very low.
"Depending on the nature of the substances on the site, the sites have a duty to provide information to the public who live or work within an area known as a ‘public information zone’.
"The size of these zones is designated by the Health and Safety Executive and the information provided to the public in these zones include the hazards on-site, risks to people and the environment and what action the public should take if they are notified that an accident has occurred.
"South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue is the local authority responsible for the sites, which means we have the responsibility for preparing, reviewing, testing and exercising external emergency plans."
The sites are Outokumpu in Sheffield; AMG Super Alloys UK Ltd, Victrex Manufacturing Ltd and Culina Ambient Ltd, all in Rotherham and DHL Supply Chain sites in Tickhill and Trax Park and Scottish Power, all in Doncaster.
