MULTI-million pound ideas are being drawn up for 12 new public parks and green spaces - prompted by a huge rise in the number of residents living in Sheffield city centre.

The remains of historic Sheffield Castle could be uncovered to form the centrepiece of a new park, Fitzalan Square could be improved, and the Porter Brook could be restored as a green corridor and wildlife haven.

Nine other schemes include a ‘Steel Route’ pedestrian thoroughfare across the city centre, and improvements to the Georgian Paradise Square, where all the buildings are Grade II listed.

The number of people living in central Sheffield has soared to more than 16,000 from just under 3,000 in 2001, according to this year’s census.
