DEPUTY Prime Minister and Hallam MP Nick Clegg has written to Communities and Local Government Secretary Eric Pickles over the Sheffield bins controversy.

He is asking what Government support would be available should the council change its mind over the proposed switch from weekly to fortnightly black bin collections.

Mr Clegg says he has been contacted by a large number of constituents over the prospect of an end to weekly bins and the scrapping of the collection of green waste.

“Whilst the precise configuration of services is a local matter, I am concerned that the city council has rashly chosen to take this decision despite the fact that the Coalition Government has pledged to announce a new additional fund to help support weekly collections. This is a change of government policy from the last Labour Government, which actively pressured councils from Whitehall to adopt fortnightly collections.”

Ruling Labour councillors say they were unable to any guarantees from the Government.
