King presents Arctic research honour

PROFESSOR Terry Callaghan, of the University of Sheffield Department of Animal and Plant Sciences, was awarded a medal by the King of Sweden for his work on understanding Arctic environments.

He joined only 60 other people who have received the Vega Medal since 1881. “When I heard I was to receive the medal my first thought was that I hope my duty is not now to die in the polar regions like the previous recipients Scott, Shackleton and Amundsen!”

Prof Callaghan, who earned the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize as part of the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change, was watched by his family as he was presented with the medal at a symposium in Sweden.
