Keen walker Reg Hobson, from Fulwood, has double cause for celebration.
Not only has the retired civil servant just reached his 79th birthday, but he’s also led his 300th walk for the Hallam Community Rambling Association, of which he is a founding member.
The group started 12 years ago, when he spotted an advert for weekly seven- to-10-mile treks in his local church magazine and contacted organisers to ask if there were any clubs which ran shorter routes for older people or beginners.
He then discovered the community was in need of someone to lead three to five-mile walks. Since then Reg has covered thousands of miles, many of them around the Peak District.
“On our first walk we had four people and a dog. Last Christmas I had to contact 55 people, so it’s come a long way.
“We’re out rain or shine. I have made a lot of friends.”
