Electrification of the rail line between Bedford and Sheffield could mean the relocation of Dronfield station.
Community representatives in Dronfield expect significant disruption across the town as a result of track and lineside changes.
Although they welcome the replacement of diesel trains, Lea Road railway bridge, a listed structure, is too low for the new trains, which means it will have to be raised or the track lowered, or both.
It could also mean Dronfield Station will have to be moved some distance away.
Network Rail outlined its plans at a meeting attended by Friends of Dronfield Station, Dronfield Civic Society and local authorities.
Electrification is due by December 2020, with survey work expected to start over the next two years.
