Sheffield is aiming to expand its snow warden service - but volunteers will no longer be given any grit or training.
The council and its contractor, Amey, who are talking to community groups, hope to increase the number from 67 into the hundreds. There are 550 free snow shovels.
Cabinet member Jack Scott said: “We’re working hard to make sure everything is ready.”
He added wardens felt training wasn’t needed and grit bags caused obstructions, with the grit quickly washing from the bags.
But Lib Dem opposition spokesman Joe Otten said: “The scheme is less ‘snow warden’ than simply ‘snow shovel’.”
