Event planned to help ease isolation in Sheffield community

Between 10am and 7pm today, residents are invited to the Vestry Hall to take part in an event organised by Age Better in Sheffield.

The aim is to bring people together to talk about what it is like to be an older person in Burngreave.

Residents will be invited to share their stories and to celebrate what makes the area a good place to live.

After the event an ‘end isolation toolkit’ will go out to 7,000 homes in Burngreave to give residents the tools to help people spot the triggers of isolation, and give them the courage to connect with neighbours to help make people less isolated.

During the event residents guests will have a chance to learn new skills, including photography and film making so that they can capture stories from their community.

Local dance, theatre and music groups will also perform and there will be a free meal at 5pm with dishes which represent the diversity of Burngreave.

The event is due to start at 10am, with Deputy Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Coun. Denise Fox expected to attend.

Nasreen Suleman, Toolkit Co-ordinator for Age Better in Sheffield, said: “We’re really looking forward to bringing everyone together, talking about local issues and how we can work together. It’s going to be a real party and we’re encouraging people of all ages and backgrounds to come down and share this special day with us.

“Involving local people in designing the toolkit is essential – it’s the only way to ensure that we meet the unique demands of the Burngreave ward.”
