Pupils at schools across the city transformed themselves into characters from the pages of children’s classics for the annual reading festival.

Classrooms and corridors teemed with faces from time-tested tomes like Mary Poppins to modern bestsellers such as Gangsta Granny.

Lound Junior School, in Chapeltown, was among many schools getting into the spirit. Children there showed off their fancy dress finery in the library, which was recently redecorated by the artist Chris Ashmore.

Proud parents answered The Star’s call by sending photos of their little ones in costume for our online gallery, and you can see a selection of the finest efforts here.

Younger children also got in on the act, thanks to children’s illustrator Layn Marlow, who ran workshops for three to five-year-olds at
libraries around the city.

She embarked on a whirlwind tour of Sheffield Central, Crystal Peaks and Ecclesall libraries where she held a series of fun sessions based on her book I’ll Catch You If You Fall.
