Favourite Things: The places that keep the world of finance moving
Dominique Upton decided to head into finance instead of going to university to study medicine. Her career has led to her moving in commercial banking circles in Sheffield for the last seven years. She gained experience in retail banking and asset finance at NatWest and Lombard which brought her into contact with small and large businesses. She was also named as the top national salesperson for asset finance for three years running, thanks to her experience in niche markets, including aviation and marine finance. Dominique, aged 25, was recently appointed as national corporate finance partner for the new WF Financial Solutions division at Wilson Field, based on Ecclesall Road South.
Genting Club Casino
A venue like no other in Sheffield that offers an unrivalled atmosphere. At the heart of the fun is a state-of-the-art casino offering the very latest in gaming technology in a vibrant and exciting environment. I’m not a big gambler but I like a few games with small stakes – the biggest amount I have ever gambled is £25 – and only because I had built that amount up from other small bets. I can see how people can get carried away with gambling but I am always careful with money. I look after my finances carefully.
St Paul’s Place
This is a fantastic landmark and inspiring public realm in Sheffield city centre. There’s a good range of café bars and restaurants, including Smoke BBQ. I like the feel of the place with the Peace Gardens and Winter Garden also right on the doorstep. I like to spend time here and in Leopold Square with my friends and networking with clients.
Cars and lorries
I’ve always worked hard ever since I was at school. I thought about going to university to study medicine but then took a management training scheme in banking. Improving myself through qualifications is important to me, as I continuously want to strengthen my CV. To remind me that I work hard I like to drive a nice car. My current car is a Mercedes E350 convertible. But I also have a quirky interest in lorries which goes back to my childhood. My dad ran a haulage business and always had a lorry called ‘Princess Dominique’.
I know lots of people don’t like it, but I really do. And it seems 25 million other people agree with me. That’s a huge footfall every year. There’s such a great choice of premium brands and stores. I like to peruse the shops and find myself drawn to the shoes, especially Kurt Geiger. I’m looking forward to seeing the new expansion plans finished.
All Bar One Sheffield
This is a stylish city bar where you can catch up with friends, unwind after work or simply find a sophisticated space to indulge in an excellent selection of food and drink. It’s become the focal point for the business community and you can always find a friendly face you know in there. My favourite cocktail is a Rhubarb Collins which has rhubarb syrup, a glug of gin, lime, lemon and ice. It’s a long drink and reminds me of a rhubarb pie – sweet and tart at the same time.
Pointing Dog Clubhouse, Ecclesall Road
I know some of my choices focus around eating and drinking but it is how I like to relax but also do business. I spend a lot of my working time networking and it’s important to meet people in the right environment.
The Clubhouse is tailored to the enjoyment of great food and drink, whether you are sampling a cocktail, fine wine or local ale.
There’s a choice of places to eat, whether you want a Sunday roast or a snack on the outside terrace (when the temperature rises), and there’s even the Club Rooms for private dining and functions. I could go there for coffee, drinks, lunch, and dinner.
When you have a job like mine and you are meeting lots of people it’s important to look good all the time. I love to keep up with the latest fashions and hand-pick from the season’s key trends.
John Lewis always has a good choice. I’m looking forward to getting my wardrobe in shape with some new-season shopping.
I’m also interested to see the new retail quarter plans and see what that brings to Sheffield.
I love going to the cinema and am a member at Cineworld. My favourite type of films are action-packed blockbusters. I’ve recently been to see the latest James Bond – Spectre – which I thought was excellent. I’ve seen some discussions about whether there will ever be a female James Bond. I think it has to be a man. James Bond is a guy, he’s all male.
