Are you dying to dine in Capri or sip a cool drink in the Sicilian sun - but can’t quite manage the cost of the flights?

Sheffield Italian restaurant Piccolino thinks it may have the answer.

It has unveiled a new heated terrace with a retractable roof - believed to be the first awning of its kind in Sheffield - to offer alfresco dining all year round.

And heated it really is.

The strength of the lamps was almost enough to tan the back of Eating Out during the launch - admittedly a warm day – last week.

Diners definitely didn’t need a jacket, although the restaurant is also offering pashminas to drape around you for those cooler nights.

Guests were served champagne and canapes while lounging on the low seating.

The people watching has also improved with the recent openings of Cosmo and Smoke barbecue restaurants bringing more night time visitors to the St Paul’s Place area.

Daniele Siro, general manager of the restaurant, said the terrace was already luring in customers from the cold.

At 36m long, it is also believed to be the longest terrace in Sheffield.

He said: “Alfresco dining is very trendy in Italy and it is proving to be very popular in Sheffield too.

“The terrace has attracted a lot of attention from people walking by and the retractable roof means that guests can enjoy being out in the fresh air come rain or shine.”

Piccolino, part of Individual Restaurants, has also launched a new spring menu and Italian wine list.
