Festival date for Sheffield bands

Hush, Ryan Young & the Electric Sunrise, Blind Saints, The Setting Sons and Deaf Crows have been chosen by Emma Bannister, Sheffield Fake Festival licensee, to perform at event at Endcliffe Park on Saturday, May 20.

Emma said: “We’ve had a fantastic response to the call for submissions and have spent the past few months reviewing all the applicants and speaking to some of the bands.

“We take the quality and professionalism of our entertainment seriously, so we run a strict application process to ensure we are getting some of the best local bands who can light up the day.

“As Sheffield has such a wide music following, I am spoilt for choice where bands are concerned, so I have been going to watch bands weekly and have the difficult task of picking a varied selection of bands to ensure there is something for everyone.

“As well as the festival crowd, we regularly have newspapers, magazines and radio stations in attendance, so it’s a real opportunity for them to grab with both hands.”

The bands will be warming up the crowd ahead of the three main tribute acts at the show – Red Hot Chili Peppers tribute band Really Hot Chili Peppers, Oasis tribute Oasish and Flash, a tribute to Queen.

Deaf Crows will be opening this year’s Sheffield Fake Festival when they take to the stage at 12.45pm.

The local two-piece act say their style has developed since they started working together.

They said: “We started off very riff-centred and we’ve always stayed true to that. But in terms of songwriting we’ve gravitated to a more groovy, rather than messy-rock undertone. We have our big heavy numbers that long-time listeners love, but for the new audience we have plenty of really driving, accessible tunes for people to pick up & enjoy.”

They will be followed by The Setting Sons at 1.35pm, who said: “We formed two years ago with the intention of paying homage to the Modfather that is Paul Weller – and even took our name from a Jam album. We’re really looking forward to playing to a great crowd.”

Blues act Blind Saints, who are due on stage at 2.25pm, said: “We believe the blues are something that can still be powerful and moving and we want to honour that.

“We began with blues standards that were played much faster than they were supposed to be, looking for the urgency and intensity of Hendrix and earlier psych acts – then we gradually filtered in different elements of other genres.

“We strongly appreciate improvising full songs during any set.”

Ryan Young & the Electric Sunrise, who are next on, at 3.15pm said: “We’re looking forward to being on stage in front of everyone.

“It’s what we do best and we love play alongside each other - the music just works. There’s nothing better than that.”

Hush are the last act due to perform before the tribute stars.

The band, who are due to play at 4.10pm , said: “On the day of the gig, we like to be as much a part of it as we can, watch the bands we’re playing with and get a feel for the audience.

“We’re a pretty excitable bunch so you’ll probably find us bouncing around down the front before we go on stage. We see it as a good warm up.”

Really Hot Chili Peppers are due on stage at 5.15pm, followed by Oasish at 7pm and Flash at 8.45pm.

Early-bird tickets are now on sale priced £18 for adults, £10 for young people aged 10 to 17. Entry is free for children aged nine and under, with no ticket required. The early-bird offer ends on April 20.
