Fire brigade were called to packed Endcliffe Park to extinguish 'deliberate' fires last night

Following pictures of huge swathes of people visiting Endcliffe Park last night South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue chiefs have now said that they had to attend ‘deliberate’ incidents of people lighting fires in the evening.

Crowds gathered in Endcliffe park yesterday during a heatwave following a loosening of Coronavirus restrictions.

People were allowed to meet in groups up to six, and mix two households, for the first time in months.

However, revellers have been blasted after a ‘disgusting’ amount of litter was left behind – and now South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue have said they even had to attend the park just before 9pm to deal with ‘small fires’.

A spokesperson from South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: “We were called at 08:50pm last night to Endcliffe Park. Central crews attended. It appears there were a number of small fires which had been started deliberately.

“Crews left just after 10pm. South Yorkshire Police were also in attendance.”
